AUEZOV UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TAKE ACTION TO IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT
- Hits: 31
In recent years, young people in Kazakhstan have been stepping up to protect the environment and promote green living. At M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University in Shymkent, students are actively supporting the nationwide “Clean Kazakhstan” campaign, launched by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. With a growing passion for sustainability, they’re developing creative solutions aimed at improving the city’s ecological situation and protecting the environment.
“Environmental pollution is a global issue that every country addresses in its own way. In Kazakhstan, it’s not just scientists leading the effort—students are contributing, too,” said representatives from the university. Students from the Department of Ecology, for example, have partnered with Nazarbayev University’s Sustainable Development Office and received support from Chevron Munaigas Inc. to launch three eco-friendly startup projects: an eco-pavilion, eco-themed art initiatives, and air filters that reduce harmful gases in a sustainable way.
Additionally, students participate in city beautification projects, educational and dual-degree programs, as well as activities organized by the city’s environmental department and field expeditions.
In 2024, under the “Young Scientist” program, doctoral students won research grants to focus on pressing environmental issues. Their work includes purifying drinking and underground water, improving air quality, recycling waste, and finding ways to turn cities into greener, more livable spaces. “These projects are aimed at addressing environmental issues specific to Shymkent and the Turkestan region,” explained Gani Iztiluev, Acting Head of the Department of Ecology at South Kazakhstan University, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, and Professor.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has highlighted the importance of the “Clean Kazakhstan” campaign, saying it unites people around the idea of caring for the natural environment of their homeland.
Students at Auezov University have embraced this idea seriously. They regularly participate in community clean-ups and work hard to raise environmental awareness. Despite the scale of the challenges, their unique projects contribute to creating a more comfortable living environment and making the world around them a little cleaner.
