- Hits: 13
As part of Science Day, a round table dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Yevney Arystanovich Buketov was held at M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University. The event honoured the legacy of the renowned scientist, academician and former rector of Karaganda State University (1973–1980).
G.I. Yelibayeva, Head of the Department of Postgraduate Education, moderated the round table. In her opening remarks, she provided a brief overview of the scientist’s life and career, emphasising his academic publications and achievements in metallurgy and chemistry.
Professors N.O. Zhakipbekova, V.M. Shevko and K.S. Nadirov prepared presentations for the audience of doctoral and master’s students, as well as young researchers, and shared their personal memories of meetings with the academician.
Professor N.O. Zhakipbekova was the first to speak. She shared memories of two meetings with Y.A. Buketov. The first took place in 1970, when the academician visited the home of his former student, O. D. Zhakipbekov, who was then the head of a phosphorus plant workshop. On that occasion, he offered words of encouragement to a young schoolgirl, advising her to pursue a career in science.
The second meeting was in 1976, at the Republican School Olympiad held at Karaganda University, where many of the participants went on to become renowned scientists, including: Y. Dubitsky (Milan, Italy), G. Seysenbayeva (Uppsala, Sweden), N. Zhakipbekova (State Prize laureate of the Republic of Kazakhstan) and A. Shayakhmetova (director of a major school in Astana).
Professor V.M. Shevko then spoke. He spoke about the academician's multifaceted creative contributions, including his works dedicated to D.I. Mendeleev, his translations of William Shakespeare's works from English into Kazakh, and his publications in the Prostor journal. He also recalled two personal encounters with Buketov: the first when Buketov was expected to be his academic supervisor and stayed in Karaganda to conduct experiments, and the second related to the study and practical implementation of a specific metallurgical process.
The third speaker, Professor K. S. Nadirov, recalled his meetings with the academician during his internship in Karaganda in the early 1980s.
The roundtable participants listened attentively to the stories about the outstanding scholar and major scientific organiser, Yevgeny Arystanovich Buketov.
